Care guide
Made to last, with a little care
Handmade pieces age well when they are looked after. Here is how.
Jute rugs
Jute is a natural plant fibre. It is strong when dry and does not like water.
- Vacuum regularly on a low setting without the rotating brush.
- Blot spills at once with a dry cloth. Do not rub.
- Spot clean with a little mild soap and as little water as possible, then dry quickly with a fan or in shade.
- Do not wash, soak or steam clean.
- Turn the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Use a rug pad on smooth floors to stop slipping.
- Some natural shedding is normal in the first weeks.
Kantha textiles
Kantha is layered cotton held together by hand stitching. Gentle washing keeps the stitches and colours true.
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean.
- Wash separately the first few times, as natural dyes may release some colour.
- Do not wring or twist. Press the water out gently.
- Dry flat or on a line in shade, away from strong sun.
- Iron on the reverse on a warm setting.
- The soft ripple of the stitching is part of the piece.
Hand-knotted pieces
Macramé and knotted wall art in jute and undyed cotton keep their shape best when kept dry and dusted.
- Dust with a soft brush or a hairdryer on a cool setting.
- Keep away from damp walls, bathrooms and direct rain.
- Comb fringes gently with your fingers. Trim stray ends with sharp scissors if needed.
- If cotton cord marks, dab with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let it dry hanging.
- Hang away from strong direct sun to avoid fading.
